WHAT
IS IT?
- a place where students can
find competent, friendly, individual, and free help
in improving their writing
- open to all BU students:
freshmen to graduate students, native speakers of English and ESL students,
basic to advanced writers
- tutoring provided by graduate
students from the Department of English and advanced undergraduates
who have been specially recruited and trained
Important:
Since the purpose of the Writing Center is to help students learn to
write well, the tutors do NOT edit, proofread, or correct
papers, but they do help students learn to identify and correct
their own errors. TOP
HOW
TO USE IT
- Call or stop in
to make an appointment in order to make sure that a tutor will be
available.
Tutors can meet with walk-ins only if they don't have previously scheduled
appointments. Appointments for application essays and papers under
five
pages are scheduled for one-half hour; those for papers five pages
and over are scheduled for an hour;
- Notify
the Center as early as possible if you cannot keep an appointment.
This enables the Center to give your appointment time to another student.
- Come to the Center
as far as possible in advance of the due-date for an assignment that
you want help with. Allow time for revising. Don't wait until the day
the assignment is due when it will be too late for your tutor to make
helpful suggestions.
- Bring to the Center
the complete instructions for your assignment, your research notes (if
any), and your first draft (if you have one).
- For questions about
proper citation of sources and biliographical form, consult the Center's
library of style manuals including the MLA Handbook, the Publication
Manual of the American Psychological Association, A Manual for
Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (based on the
Chicago Syle), and The ACS Style Guide. These may be used in
the Center only. Other more general handbooks about academic writing
may be checked out.
